My keyboard did have to be replaced after the wine incident a couple of nights ago; space bar and enter were casualties. Apparently while connecting and testing the new one, the blog software saved a draft! The zeroes appeared when I plugged in the USB connector, not from typing.

Then there was another wine incident tonight. I knocked over a full glass again, this time while eating dinner, and the glass crashed into an empty glass also on the table, breaking both, and splattering wine on the couch, wall, me… and one side of Casper was also purple. Then she moved around and wiped the wine on two more walls. Geez.

Dinner in our apartment in Rome. Note the wine.
Dinner in Rome Italian wine
Somehow I asked for this red wine and how much it cost in Italian in a little grocery…

Feel free to suggest a caption for this one.

Jet lagged!

By Amy at 9:52 pm on Saturday, June 14, 2008

This has been a very long day, and I’m about to climb in bed! Thankfully we had a direct flight from Rome and Dad picked us up in Chicago. Downloaded about 1,000 pictures, but I’ll just put up a couple for now.

The keyboards at the internet cafe here in Trastavere are different enough that I canàt type worth a crap.

Weàre having a great time, and the streets are bustling at 10ç30 p.m. (canàt find that key at all= ). Tomorrow is Pompeii, and still tonight Iàm off for falafel and gelato (not sure if that will be a good combo). I have not been chased by dogs nor screamed at by drunks for Bushàs atrocities, but other members of my party have!

Now to figure out how to fix my in-flight meal for the way back…

Cìao!

(a little IRC speak from ages ago)

See y’all in a week or so–I’m on vacation! It takes more time to get READY for vacation than to take one, so let’s hope it’s a good, relaxing one!

I leave you with this, watching TV with my first piggy, Frisky:

Cute furry things, eastside sushi, and geek stuff

By Amy at 11:53 pm on Thursday, May 29, 2008

I took two foster buns and my piggy Cappy to the vet today. One of the buns is Whitney, who was found hopping about homeless in someone’s yard on Memorial Day. She’s a very pretty, plush rabbit.

While I was there, this beautiful fawn was brought in in a printer box.

She had been found down in a well near 56th and Arlington with a fox perched at the top watching her. She made cries like a lamb when the vet touched her; she was cold and in pain. If warming her and giving her fluids and pain meds can get her strong enough to stand, there are several local deer rehabbers, but young deer imprint strongly on people and tend to become nuisances when subsequently released to the wild because they are too comfortable around humans. Animal Control showed up, also having been called by the cop who brought her in, and I suppose it was lucky for the fawn that she was too ill to go with them to be immediately euthanized. Even if that’s her likely fate at the vet’s office, fewer transports to scary places are a little better. I would also expect that the vet and techs are gentler than an ACO.

David and I tried a new restaurant last week, Oishi Sushi. Would you believe it’s at 10th and Shadeland? Not an area exactly known for its exotic flavors. They don’t have their liquor license yet, but the food was very good. Someone ordered WAY more food than I did…

It was formerly a Chinese buffet that was formerly a Ponderosa (noted by the pines on the awning) but they’ve redecorated appropriately.

New computer! Which I’m not using to type this.
Assembly:

David got it up and running (with a little patient-diagram-reading from me) the same day the parts arrived, and has been kind enough to test it out on the plasma TV with his games using a wireless keyboard from the couch! I haven’t actually touched it yet.

Specs for the geeks, like Grandpa who always wants the best system:

Book release: the most famous person I know!

By Amy at 11:49 pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Nicole and I went to the book release party for Half-Assed: A Weight Loss Memoir on Saturday. It just so happens that the author, Jennette Fulda, lives here in Indianapolis and also has a blog. The difference is that hers is internationally famous and she got a book deal! Jennette is very down to earth and Nicole and I were happy to be at the release party. We all had dinner together with Mymsie and friends a few months back just because we got in the habit of reading each other’s blogs and decided it would be fun to meet. It was the first time I met someone on the internet NOT for the purpose of dating! Much more fun to have dinner out with fellow bloggers. Anyway, congrats to Jennette for losing half her body weight, running a mini-marathon Saturday morning, and then celebrating the release of her book in the afternoon!

And here we are with the author, posing with her giant pants promo materials, Jennette signing our book (I haven’t read it yet so this post will be lacking a review!), and posing with our “Pasta Queen” scepters.

ETA: Set your TiVo to record Jennette on the Today Show on Mother’s Day!

I didn’t mean to cut off poor Jennette’s head there. The new blog software’s thumbnail feature does it automatically, and I’m not yet smart enough (i.e. I haven’t visited the help forums yet) to fix it. If you click on the thumbnail you do seem to get the real, uncropped pic, at least.

I came home to find the dogs having a meeting.

Stimulating

By Amy at 11:09 am on Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Looks like economic stimulus checks started going out this week. You can check the schedule of when you’ll get yours here.

So what will you be doing with your newfound cash? So far I’ve heard a coworker is getting car repairs and his dog’s tooth crowned, a lot of people are paying down credit cards, for many, money is going straight to savings and retirement accounts and emergency funds, and one person was buying a computer. I planned to leave it in the old checking account and it’ll just go to various normal expenses like any other directly-deposited money. I am currently on board for a trip to Rome and I need a new computer so I suppose it will contribute to those things as well. Now that I’m done paying for teeth, the next step is to pay off school loans, especially since my employer is cutting jobs and I’ve been considering going back to school! How could I ever let myself get MORE school loans?

Anyway, I liked this idea to give the money to something that supports a charity of your choice. Of course the post entertained me because it focused on giving it to charities that the current administration (of which I am hardly a fan) disapproves, but I try to steer clear of politics here since some of my readers do not share my views. I’m not sure why that should matter since I rant about everything else, but there ya go. I have, however, been known to buy trinkets for my dad celebrating Bush’s term ending. He’s always good for a political rant on the phone.

Doing anything sensible (or fun) with your stimulus?

A social life?

By Amy at 6:14 pm on Sunday, April 13, 2008

Yesterday at Petco, Pippen was so zonked he looked very dead.

This is for you, Matt.

cubsyes.jpg

David and I went out for sushi last night, and then Mike and Carla invited us out to the Chatterbox, the first time I’d been there. It was incredibly crowded for awhile but we eventually were able to sit down, thanks to Carla being on top of chasing down people who were leaving and generally being willing to talk to anyone (just ask Doreen). Carla found a footless army man in the bathroom and he did not burn.

After a few drinks, David went up between sets to talk to the pianist, “Doc” Virginia Jefferson, who had him play with her for a bit. He’s looking for a jazz teacher.

BTW, I got $22.37 for my recycled crowns. I won’t spend it all in one place.

Overwhelmed, I guess

By Amy at 12:50 am on Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Okay, just getting email is starting to piss me off. I feel like there is too much going on and actually things are not that busy at the moment, but every incoming message requires me to do something. My stupid spam catcher is catching a lot of my real mail despite my numerous attempts to tell it I WANT mail from those addresses, making the inbox experience doubly aggravating. I can’t keep up with work and rescue stuff and there’s already so much mail about rowing, which hasn’t even started yet, that I’m stressed about it and don’t want to participate. Work is busy with lots of uncertain changes and a new boss and I’m more in a mood to coast. The dogs are being annoying and the house is a mess and I’m just blah.

I bought tickets to Rome the other day after an opportunity fell in my lap. And I’m not even excited yet… I just want a break! Now!

Slightly entertaining, though, is that David is watching Office Space and even five minutes in, I’ve laughed several times.

But I must go to bed and return to the grind in the morning.

Driving with the brakes on

By Amy at 1:43 am on Wednesday, March 26, 2008

will land you over $700 in Jeep repairs. So if you smell something burning, and you can’t figure out what’s wrong with your car, assume it will cost a lot once the mechanic figures it out, because by then the brakes are melted to the axle or something like that. Oh, and the throttle control might still be busted too, which will run another $200. What was I saying about being lucky?

It’s Captain Spaaaaacemaaaaaan! Okay, I know it was Captain Caveman. David’s Tyvek-type suit is donned when he’s spraying lacquer in the shop. It even has a blue oval sticker on the left chest like it’s a NASA outfit.

Oh, and after posting that my feet were doing fine overall, I have some weird new pain on the side of my foot this week that is making it hard to walk. Maybe I should quit blogging. The universe seems to think it’s being taunted.

Foot fetish issues

By Amy at 11:08 pm on Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Let’s just see how that title affects site searches.

I usually get a new pair of slippers for Christmas. I wear them every day at home; I like to take off my shoes as soon as I’m in the door and get comfy, but the floor’s too dirty to go around without slippers. (It could be freshly swept and mopped and I still wouldn’t want to go around without footwear. Issue #1.) This year I asked for slippers from a different company than my usual brand since the old company started selling rabbit fur items and I didn’t want to patronize them. Somehow I still got multiple other gifts from that company, but that’s the way it goes.

Anyway, the new slipper place sent a catalog of supposedly comfy shoes and appliances, including items to wear to deal with bunions, corns, hammer toes, etc. I can’t speak to bunions and corns, but I do have a “mallet toe,” which is basically a toe that curves down sharply at the last joint. It’s similar to a hammer toe but a different joint is involved.

(That x-ray is not my feet. It was just a lot less gross looking than putting up a picture of actual feet. The middle toes are mallet toes.)
mallett.jpg toe.jpg

Seeing the appliances got me thinking about whether such an item would help me. But what does it help? Frankly, I am not bothered by 32 years of a mallet toe. Every once in awhile a new pair of shoes will cause a blister on top of it, but I wear very sensible shoes (I’m boring like that, Issue #2) and rarely have a problem. To read about mallet toes online, you’d think I ought to be hobbled and scheduling surgery.

Also, I hate feet (Issue #3). I think my brother used to torture me by putting his feet on me. I am forever grossed out by the image of my dad cutting his toenails on newspaper in the family room. My mom has this funky sideways toenail (which I may get someday too due to the same surgery I had on my toe) that just freaks me out. David can touch me with his feet sometimes, but only if I can’t see them nor feel the nails. And I better think they’re clean. It’s not necessarily better when he wears socks because I sense all the dirt and hair that must be on them from wandering the floors in our house or the day of sweat if they just exited work boots.

After reading about how treacherous mallet toes are, I wondered if the reason I only wear sensible, comfortable footwear is because my body knows if I picked heels and cute things I’d be in pain. See, I’m highly evolved, not lacking in fashion sense. Mallet toes are normally caused by bad footwear choices. Being lucky enough to be born with my toes all curled backwards against my feet and around each other and then wearing a bar between my shoes to straighten out legs and feet, I didn’t have the chance to screw up my toe via bad shoes. Mom says I was too crowded and I looked like I’d be crippled when I was born, but frankly I walk fine, ran track (poorly but I doubt it was related) and get around like anyone else. An orthopedist once found one leg longer than the other, but as long as I row starboard and not port, I’m not in pain. And I can even go port now and then.

Many foot things stand out in my life. The moon boots I had to wear because they were practical, per my Dad. And how relieved I was in 6th grade when my mom and I were in cahoots to buy new fashionable boots for me and stash them away as a Christmas gift so it would be too late to return them. The bread bags I had to wear in the moon boots because they leaked (I have met others subjected to this same punishment). The monster feet slippers with crashing sounds my high school roommate gave me. My frequent purchase of men’s shoes because my feet are too big (11) to find women’s shoes about 90% of the time. Once I found a pair of women’s size 10.5 hiking boots and they’re awesome. Nothing else fits as well and I’ve never seen that size again. Hence, the crying jags when I attempt to shoe shop. The jelly shoes that were popular when I was a kid and that I wasn’t allowed to have because they were bad for my feet (which led me to believe that all girls in jelly shoes had uncaring, ill-informed parents).

There you go. Feet and I are not friends. And if someone ever finds a very comfortable, semi-stylish, work-appropriate non-leather shoe in my size, please tell me. VERY comfortable is required. Lots of support. My feet hurt when I don’t wear tennies to work, and it’s hard to get away with those most days.

feet.jpg

Strangely enough, two other local bloggers (Must Be Motherhood, Distracted by Something Shiny) talked about feet and shoes this week while I was drafting my post. Is it the time of year for robins to return (saw the first one yesterday) and feet topics?

So much for my lucky streak

By Amy at 11:33 pm on Saturday, March 1, 2008

Good thing I had all that good luck in February, because last night I discovered my furnace had stopped working. After a motor on fire and a $400 bill, it’s warm in the house again. I shouldn’t have taunted the universe with my good fortune!

“I got some chicks with that song”

By Amy at 1:03 am on Friday, February 8, 2008

David was playing piano and singing tonight while I was working on taxes. He skips around with whatever’s in his head, so we had portions of songs like one I don’t know from Marvin Gaye, Movin’ Out, Sail On, Somewhere Out There, Desperado, Hotel California, You Light Up My Life, the Piña Colada song… and then I heard something that reminded me of church camp: Friends are Friends Forever.

David is very not-religious (like me, but he’s more obnoxious about it). So I asked him why in the world he knew that Michael W. Smith song and why he was singing it. He said, “I got some chicks with that song.”

Of course. I think that was one of the main reasons he played piano in his youth!

Then he did another MWS song, Emily, to which I knew none of the words, but knew I’d heard it before. He doesn’t know why he knows that one at all. He does keep bringing up one of my bunny volunteers named Emily who went to his high school and on whom he apparently had a crush many years ago…

Note: while doing taxes, I calculated that I drove over 11,000 miles for bunny things last year. Even claiming just 14¢ a mile, that adds up. I went to Petco 125 times!

Ever been flipped off for four miles?

By Amy at 1:25 pm on Sunday, January 27, 2008

Yesterday, on the way back from the gym, I was going through a yellow light at a major intersection and another car came through in the lane next to me, blowing his horn (a silly, wimpy horn I might add…I think one of the tones wasn’t working). Since the light would have been red by the time he drove through, I thought maybe he was just sounding the horn to keep people from hitting him or maybe he was on the way to the hospital or something.

So this very crappy Toyota Tercel (it only said RC on the back because the other letters had fallen off) went on ahead, and changed lanes a few times, but came to drive a relatively normal speed and stopped at lights he could have run on yellow. I didn’t think much about it, until the lanes were decreasing to one at a stoplight. I stayed in my lane, which would be ending after the light, and decided to get ahead of this Tercel on my left. Operating on the same theory that my car goes faster than a semi so it makes sense to get in front of them, I knew this taped-together car wouldn’t be able to keep up with my turbo, but I wasn’t in a race or anything!

Well, this guy was pissed. As I pulled ahead in the intersection, he laid on the horn, and kept sounding it for quite awhile. Of course by this time I was WAY ahead of him because his car just couldn’t keep up, but I could see him pounding his fists in the air. I’m sure he would have tailgated me but his car wasn’t fast enough! So I get to the next stoplight, and happen to be first in line there in the single through lane. He eventually gets there and whips around through the left turn lane and pulls his car diagonally in front of mine in the intersection, flipping me off and yelling and waving his fists. I shook my head in the old “geez, if it matters to you so much, you go right on ahead” manner. I wasn’t in a hurry and he could drive his crappy Tercel in front of me if he needed to so badly.

So now the light turns green and he goes ahead, but he drives r e a l l y s l o w l y to try to make me mad. This goes on for awhile (I made no gestures or other contact with this guy who was still shaking his fists in his rearview and watching me), and then when we get more driving lanes, he drives down the middle of both so I can’t get around (I wasn’t even trying…I figured he was too big an ass to worry about it). I’m still getting the flip-offs the whole way. Then we come to railroad tracks and he slows down, which is normal because those tracks are very rough. But he gets to the top and stops his car completely, flipping me off and making jerk-off motions in the rearview and just really being the biggest ass I’ve ever met in a car!

At the next light, there is another lane and then it ends again, so he slowed down to see if I would try to get in the other lane (I assume so he could dash over and cut me off?). I stayed behind the idiot, who is still turning around to look at me and flip me off, and another car gets in that new lane to the right of him. He scoots way out in the intersection to keep her from going past once the light changes, but she was just turning right. I had considered getting in that lane and waving and smiling to him with a “Have a nice day!” kill-em-with-kindness move, and then turn and go another way, but frankly I was afraid he or his passenger would get out and kick my car or worse. This guy was nuts.

As we go forward again and he’s driving really slowly again to make me mad, and still making rude gestures, I jump off at a different street that he has passed and decide to go another way. I was within a few blocks of home and didn’t really want him to know where I lived! So, take note: if you see a white POS Tercel with most of the letters gone and an IN plate starting with 97, call him in for impaired driving. That’s what I should have done.

Notes: I should have taken a picture or video of this guy. I think I was so amazed at how ridiculous he was that I forgot my camera was right there. Also, I looked online for photo or video of the annoying flair waiter in Office Space because this whole thing reminded me of his double-flip-off, only that seemed funnier…

Office space

By Amy at 1:13 pm on Thursday, January 17, 2008

Overheard at work:
“What’s the procedure number for the procedure on procedures?”

Ah, to work in a regulated industry. What a contrast to when I worked as a chemist for a fragrance company. How many procedures did they have? Zero. (I prefer the procedures, actually.)
